PRAY FOR ME

you can hear me now
because i’m silent

you can read my thoughts
because they’re
running down my face

*
sometimes it’s the little things
that can do the most damage

the little hole in your balloon
you huff and puff
but you get nowhere

*
today the winds are stronger than my strength
tonight my weakness is weaker than you think

pray for me
or i’ll be gone by morning

From the book THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE

WHERE YOUR HEART IS, YOUR TREASURE ALSO

what are we chasing

the money will burn, the houses
the fields too

what are we chasing to hold onto
when heaven can hold all we need
no rust, no moths or thieves

but down here, we chase
only reflections of self-loathing

images of untrue truths about ourselves, but

the only things that matter are
what we cannot touch
what only God can hold

faith, hope, and love
chase these
and their abundance will overwhelm you

but if you don’t
nobody warns you
because nobody cares

but i do

i’ll tell you what you already feel inside
that in this place
we chase the tails of our fears and fleeting obsessions
and if we don’t look up now
we will be left holding nothing but moths and rust

WHEN TOGETHER

You are the giver and the taker

the chaos and the rest

the filler inside this thinning void

the praise inside my breath

who is who when seen together

we’re a match conceived in heaven

beyond beginnings without borders

who can separate these waters

when together there are no seasons

when apart there is no rest

there’s just You, the Patient Potter

and then there’s me, your faithful mess

YOU AND I

i am worn out
the world has drained me once again
and i have shut the door against it

but you
my morning Sun and Shield
are always welcomed

beyond my tattered window
the sky is drunk with blue
our blue
and the birds sing us a song
our song
and chirp the scripture for the day

it’s true
we are stuck together
You and i
like deep shades of blue
glued to this spacious sky
and we are in luck!
for no one in this world can separate us

DUSK

birds nest, the light fades

dusk yawns, and the moon

peeks early

*

the sun objects and tries to sing

one last line as darkness drapes

its diamond-studded satin sheet

against the dreamy blue sky

the day is gone, done trying

*

birds rest, convinced tomorrow

the earth will once again

open wide to provide its morning meal and

the sun, while he slumbers now,

will return in time to give the blessing

THE FIRE, THEN THE GLAZE: A Poem

THE FIRE, THEN THE GLAZE

we are all born to be clay on
the Potters table
yearning to be molded by
prophetic hands, blistered and worn
the markings of a Master Artist who’s
been working with His hands longer
then His name existed

we are all eager to be crafted
but fear the fire

it’s what we all need though
to feel the flame of renewal
it’s what the Potter wants
it’s what He came here to do

passing us through the fire triumphantly
glazed and useful
making beautiful creations
destined to become bowls
some spoons
some cups
ready to hold the Water of Life

but He knows
that purpose is found first by being wise to be useful
and then willing
willing to be broken and made new

there is no fear in being broken
when the One who loves you more
than life is holding you

no piece broken will be lost
no one is ever lost
just waiting to be found
and when He finds you
be ready to be emptied
while empty
prepare to be filled
so filled to overflowing
we wet the feet of those who thirst around us

what joy to water the earth!

but first, the molding
then the carving
the fire, then the glaze

IT’S TIME

i have
to be
kicked
pulled down
dragged out
shoved
bumped
squeezed
rammed and broken to change

it must be time to change
