MY ANXIOUS HEART: A Poem

MY ANXIOUS HEART

be anxious for nothing You said
yet, i lie here worrying about things
not worth my time or Yours

I waste away while
licking religious wounds
nails chewed down to flesh
leaving me left with the taste of
earth and curse, curses laid to rest beneath
mounds of my abandoned past
and still, i keep digging

when will i get tired of digging empty
graves for memory’s sake
stirring up what You’ve already buried
that day i said yes to the better things

why do i persist in devaluing the time You took to
craft my soul from unemployed dust particles to
flesh and bone

You, the Inventor of Flesh,
thought it not a waste to get down
on hands and knees
Holiness kissing earth, and
breathe into my imperfect heap

Love whispered Life into my stillness
body meeting Living Word again
what were the words You breathed?

I AM in love with you

my heart leaps!

From the book THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE

PRAY FOR ME

you can hear me now
because i’m silent

you can read my thoughts
because they’re
running down my face

*
sometimes it’s the little things
that can do the most damage

the little hole in your balloon
you huff and puff
but you get nowhere

*
today the winds are stronger than my strength
tonight my weakness is weaker than you think

pray for me
or i’ll be gone by morning

From the book THE TRUTH ABOUT LOVE

I Am Many Arrows

carving day again, my love
time to take on
shapes of arrows
become separate from trees

once again be
married to string
and bent to bow
grabbed by the middle
pulled back and
shot across
land and sea

i will do it again and again
but i may never
reach your heart
again

WHERE YOUR HEART IS, YOUR TREASURE ALSO

what are we chasing

the money will burn, the houses
the fields too

what are we chasing to hold onto
when heaven can hold all we need
no rust, no moths or thieves

but down here, we chase
only reflections of self-loathing

images of untrue truths about ourselves, but

the only things that matter are
what we cannot touch
what only God can hold

faith, hope, and love
chase these
and their abundance will overwhelm you

but if you don’t
nobody warns you
because nobody cares

but i do

i’ll tell you what you already feel inside
that in this place
we chase the tails of our fears and fleeting obsessions
and if we don’t look up now
we will be left holding nothing but moths and rust
